Kingsley Gunatillake

Kingsley Gunatillake is a visual artist working across painting, sculpture, installation, and book art. He has participated in numerous national and international art workshops, solo and group exhibitions.

His recent works include solo exhibitions at the Freeze Art Fair in Seoul, Korea, and the New Delhi Art Fair. Additionally, his work was featured in a spotlight exhibition at Cinnamon life Hotel - City of Dreams.

Kingsley’s art has been exhibited extensively in Sri Lanka and abroad, with his works included in national and international art collections, including the Sri Lanka Presidential Art Collection. He is also a recipient of prestigious awards such as the BIB, NOMA, and Bhunka Awards.

Dedicated to contemporary art, Kingsley continues to explore and innovate through his creative practice.

MAARA

Kingsley Gunatillake’s Maara exhibition invites the viewer into a complex and layered exploration of desire, creation, and the unconscious. With conceptual audacity and aesthetic sophistication, the exhibition pushes the boundaries of Gunatillake’s distinct auteuristic approach, inviting contemplation on the nature of human ambition, spirituality, and the psyche. Drawing inspiration from his longstanding connection with Japan, especially the minimalist elegance found in its cultural expressions, the exhibition’s conceptual seed was sown during a visit to the Sanjūsangen-dō shrine in Kyoto. There, Gunatillake encountered the 1,001 statues of Kannon, which ignited the idea for Maara, a project that would take nearly three years to materialize.

"We had a goal to recycle the boats that had been abandoned on the eastern seaboard (oru)after the tsunami and the ethnic war. The meaningful act of re-mastering those canoes is a flow of art.The main challenge was to produce the artwork in such a way that the original character of the canoes was still present.

「私たちの目標は、津波と民族紛争後に東海岸に放置されたボート（オル）をリサイクルすることでした。そのボートを再生するという意味のある行為は、アートの流れとして表現されます。主な課題は、ボートの元々の特徴を保ちながら、作品を作り上げることでした。慎重に作業を重ね、ボートの集まりが咲き誇る蓮の花のように形作られました。また、次に、上昇する海の波を表現するリズミカルなシーンがボートの群れを使って作り出されました。」

"Year Planner is a look at the ruins of a war that claimed so many lives and threatened peace. It takes a stand against war and its consequences. Time and space are set by those who plan them, but I choose to intervene. This process creates meaning, evokes emotion, and provides direction."

"Pits of War Fire are created upon possible to read ethnic conflict upon all the documents written about contemporary Sri Lankan Culture. This is not a reading done by separating one from the other. it paves the way to severe ethnic polarization. We are emphasizing the fact that the Constitution of 1972 was formulated with the intention of raising hostilities between Sinhala and Tamil Ethnic groups to a high level. It was indeed a plan, drafted for communal war."
